Atkinson Nursery began in the fall of 1989, when Bill and Cindy Atkinson decided to construct four greenhouses on the front of their farm in Theodore, Alabama. They wanted to try the relatively new idea in the nursery industry of growing color in large pots.
Bill determined that the business would be run on Christian principles such as honesty and integrity and it would give him a chance to spend time with his children in a family-run business.
As their family increased, so did the nursery. As the years passed it grew from four greenhouses, to ten, then twelve, then twenty four, and then thirty six. The nursery continued to expand, but more importantly it fulfilled Bill and Cindy Atkinson’s greatest desire, to be able to teach, train, and raise their children at home.
All of the children were homeschooled, and grew up working in the nursery. As the boys got older, and the nursery’s initial help moved away, the work was taken over by the family itself. For several years the entire business was handled by the Atkinson family and their close relatives, but as the nursery expanded, the need for help also increased.
Today Atkinson Nursery continues to do business according to the Atkinson family’s Christian standards of honesty, quality, and good service. Many people now depend on the nursery for plants which consistently set a high mark for size, color, and quality that is rarely surpassed. The nursery is still run by the Atkinson family, and still services multiple landscapers and garden centers, as well as providing plants for larger companies as well. They are quick to give God the glory for all the success of the nursery, and thankful for the many years it has given them together as a family.
